Maremma refers to an area that runs along the Tyrrhenian coast of western Italy from south of Pisa down to north of Rome. It is an area that encompasses zone such as the Val di Cornia (see Ambrosini Lorella), Bolgheri (home to the world famous wines of Sassicaia and Ornellaia, among others), and most notably for our present case, the region surrounding the town of Scansano, where Morellino di Scansano is produced. Monica, along with her husband, run an “agriturismo” on the property and invite you to come see them in the midst of the sweet rolling hills of the Maremma Bassa (lower Maremma).

Morellino di Scansano DOC 2001

90% Sangiovese Grosso, 10% Ciliegiolo

Dark ruby with a garnet core. Opens with lovely aromas of cinnamon and cedar. Very full and plush, with focused plum confiture mingling with a whisper of bittersweet chocolate. Sweet tannins envelop the palate, and anise and spice linger on the finish. A beautifully balanced and delicious Morellino.
