The
town of Panzano is perched along the ridge that
divides the Pesa River valley (Val di Pesa)
from the Greve River Valley (Valle della Greve),
in the heart of Chianti Classico, and is considered
one of the most important wine areas of the
zone, let alone all of Tuscany. Just above the
town, along the same ridge, is a villa that
once overlooked the Stinche Alte
prison of the Medici. Friends and families of
inmates in this prison used to gather at this
villa to send waves (cenni) to their loved ones
in the prison below, and thus the site became
known as Cennatoio. Leandro Alessi
purchased the Cennatoio villa in 1971 as a country
home for his family.
